Ready to Function Better? Meet Niki, Your Movement Specialist
“A single arrow is easily broken, but not ten in a bundle.”
The simple Japanese proverb above rings true in many instances in life, especially when it comes to our health. Sometimes we try to solve issues with our body on our own, only to be disappointed with less than stellar results or no results at all. Over time, self-treatment can lead to subsequent, more concerning issues. It is easy to forget that our body is interconnected in every way, so addressing an issue at its core — with professional help — can lead you to function at your best. Working towards a health goal often takes teamwork. At Function 4 Life, Movement Specialist Niki is ready to be a part of your bundle!
Originally from the Detroit area, Niki has spent nearly 20 years treating clients of all ages with a wide range of health needs. She was motivated to pursue massage therapy after resolving her mother’s chronic neck pain caused by years of work as an electrician. Niki graduated from Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy in 1999 with a focus on neuromuscular, craniosacral, sports, Swedish and shiatsu massage, as well as reflexology, trigger point therapy and myofascial release therapy. Her passion for helping others feel better is unwavering to this day.
A Business is Born
Niki worked for health clubs and treated clients privately for 18 years. During a private session with a client named Jo, Niki embarked on a life-changing business venture. As a middle-aged, collegiate golf player, Jo utilized stretch centers outside of Michigan to improve her athleticism and overhaul health. In recognizing the need for stretch centers in the metro Detroit area, she teamed up with Niki and their mutual friend, Dave, to open Function 4 Life in August 2017.
As a full-time movement specialist, Niki’s goal with each client is to create a personalized session and restoration program. Whether a client has scar tissue that needs to be broken up or wants to meet a specific workout goal, she aims to meet each individual’s needs. She figures out a pain source, addresses it and advises on ways to prevent future issues.
“I was looking for a way to take my clients to the next level and fascial stretching therapy (FST) combined with massage therapy was a perfect way to do that,” Niki said. “This full-body approach has been life changing for them and it is so fulfilling to see them leave here pain-free and full of life.”
For anyone hesitant about trying FST, Niki reiterates how important listening to a client’s body is to her. Even if a client requests strong pressure, for example, Niki lets the body decide what level of strength is permitted. She also wants first-timers to know that clients can be fully clothed during a session if that makes them feel most comfortable.
Continuing Her Craft
Always looking for ways to improve client care, Niki enjoys furthering her education. She has earned accreditation from Stretch to Win Institute and has completed Level 1 and Level 2 Fascial Stretch Therapy. She is working on her certification in the Graston Technique for soft tissue mobilization and aims to complete Level 3 Fascial Stretch Therapy soon after.
When she’s not treating clients, Niki treats herself to renovation! She is currently knee-deep in restoring a 1930s home. But that’s not her only fun fact! Aside from being a dedicated physical therapist and home renovator, Niki holds another unique, prestigious title: kidney donor. During her time at a fitness center, Niki donated a kidney to one of her employees. “It’s been nine years now and it’s still pretty fulfilling to see pictures of my kidney recipient with her kids,” she said. This experience has helped shape her career as well. Having undergone a major surgery herself, she can understand what it feels like to have scar tissue. “It helps me work on my surgery patients,” she said.
Clients Say It Best
From new mothers to athletes to surgery patients, Niki continues to treat a host of clients successfully. One of her favorite treatment stories comes from a client who visited Function 4 Life with a gift certificate in hand. A cancer patient, she was getting hardly any sleep due to scar tissue affecting her breathing. She would wake up at night gasping for air since her diaphragm was unable to expand sufficiently. Niki zeroed in on the problem and went to work on the client’s stomach, ribs and diaphragm. The next day, the client called Niki and exclaimed, “I slept last night!” This was a proud moment for our movement specialist.
